Espérame en el cielo
A very funny film with many
famous veteran Spanish actors giving brilliant performances. It tells of a
shopkeeper abducted to act as Franco's double. |
|
Pídele cuentas al Rey (No
subtitles)
Starring the famous television
actor Antonio Resines. Based on the true story of a redundant Asturian miner
who walks to Madrid with his family to demand that the King complies with
the Constitution, which gives him the right to work. "La mejor comedia
española del año" |
|
Makinavaja
A number of episodes of the television version
of the Catalan strip cartoon. |
|
¡Plaf!
A satirical Cuban comedy which
brings in relationships between family members and neighbours, bureaucracy,
Santería and, incidentally, Cuban film-making. Worth watching just for the
story of the filing cabinet. |

Cóndores no entierran todos
los días (Colombia)
Based on Gardeazábal's novel of
La Violencia en Colombia. Tells the story of El Cóndor, infamous leader of
the Conservative death squads in Valle del Cauca. The film evokes the place
and its people very cleverly, showing how this 'Pedacito de Cielo'' was torn
apart after the assassination of Gaitán en 1948. |

Ay, Carmela (Spain)
Three entertainers (a couple,
plus a young mute they have rescued from the street) are giving a travelling
show in the Republican front late in the Civil War. They steal fuel to
escape to Valencia, but fall into the hands of the Nationalist advance. They
are forced to entertain the troops and also Polish prisoners from the
International Brigades, who are to be shot the next day. The final number is
an obscene insult to the Republic. Carmela cannot take this, mutinies and is
shot. The last scene is the final farewell in the cemetery. The above does
not do justice to a moving and at times very funny film. |
|
El Día de la Bestia (No
subtitles)
A typical Alex de la Iglesia
offering, funny and irreverent. A priest single-handedly attempts to prevent
the birth of the Antichrist by infiltrating Satan's forces. No subtitles. |
|
La Vaquilla (No subtitles)
Another Civil War film. A group of Republican
soldiers try to spoil a Nationalist celebration and, at the same time, get
some fresh meat, by stealing a calf from behind enemy lines. |
